After winning over 1,000+ international awards, Prairie Berry Winery (located next door to Miner Brewing Company) has become the region’s most awarded winery. Their most recent win came at the 2018 Indy International Wine Competition, the scientifically largest and organized independent wine competition in the United States, where they took home 10 awards including two gold medals for Anna Pesä Louka 2017 and Red Ass Rhubarb, their most popular, most award-winning wine.
“It is not very common to pass the 1,000-award mark in the wine industry and we are so honored to be one of the wineries to achieve this,” said fifth generation winemaker Sandi Vojta. “It’s surreal and something you don’t set out to do, but you do the best you can and make the best product every day. I never would have dreamt of this happening and I’m really grateful to be here and share it with everyone.”
From her first wine competition in 2001, where she won a double gold for her Wild Grape wine, winemaker Sandi knew South Dakota made wines could compete in any prestigious wine competition.
“It was so ingrained early on that we can produce an international award-winning wine here in South Dakota that is recognized by some of the top wine industry leaders in California,” said Sandi Vojta. “To this day it has always been on my mind.”
Prairie Berry Winery was founded in 1999 in a 500 sq. ft. basement. Sandi, together with her father and husband, set out to create a unique South Dakota experience by way of a family tradition of winemaking. Sandi’s great-great-grandmother, Anna Pesä, immigrated to the Dakota Territory in 1876 from Moravia, Czech Republic. On the South Dakota prairie, Anna used the local fruits she called ‘prairie berries’ to create wine for her family.
Today, from a 20,000 sq. ft. state of the art wine production facility in the Black Hills of South Dakota, Prairie Berry Winery has grown into one of the most successful wineries in the region.
Prairie Berry Winery’s top awarded wines include, Red Ass Rhubarb, Calamity Jane, Lawrence Elk, and Gold Digger. These wines are available in the Tasting Room in Hill City, South Dakota, online, and in select South Dakota, Wyoming, and North Dakota wine retailers.
